Women’s Hair Removal Guide
Choosing a hair removal product can be confusing. Should you buy an epilator, a women’s shaver, a bikini trimmer, an IPL device, wax or a depilatory cream?
This guide explains the differences between the main hair removal methods and helps you choose the right solution based on your experience, skin sensitivity, the area you want to treat and how long you want your skin to stay smooth.
1. Which Hair Removal Method Is Right for You?
| Method | How it works | How long it lasts | Pain level | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Epilator | Removes hair from the root using rotating tweezers. | Usually several weeks | Medium | Legs, arms and body |
| Electric Shaver | Cuts hair at skin level. | Usually 1–3 days | Very low | Quick, painless hair removal |
| Bikini Trimmer | Shortens and shapes hair without pulling it from the root. | Several days | Very low | Bikini area and sensitive areas |
| IPL | Light energy targets the hair follicle to progressively reduce regrowth. | Long-term hair reduction | Low to medium | Regular users wanting long-term reduction |
| Wax | Removes hair from the root using hot or warm wax. | Several weeks | Medium to high | Large areas and traditional waxing |
| Depilatory Cream | Dissolves the hair at or just below the skin surface. | Usually several days | Usually low | Quick and painless body hair removal |
2. Electric Epilators: What Is an Epilator?
An electric epilator removes hair from the root. A rotating head contains multiple tweezers or discs that grip the hair and pull it out.
Because the hair is removed from the root rather than simply cut, the skin generally stays smooth for much longer than with shaving.
Good to know:
An epilator does not permanently remove hair. Hair eventually grows back because the follicle remains active.
3. Braun Silk·épil: What Is the Difference Between the Models?
Braun’s Silk·épil family ranges from basic corded epilators to more advanced wet & dry cordless models with wider or flexible heads and additional accessories.
| Silk·épil family | Typical positioning | Ideal for |
|---|---|---|
| Silk·épil 3 | Simple entry-level epilation | Beginners and occasional users |
| Silk·épil 5 | More advanced epilation, with some wet & dry cordless versions | Beginners who want more comfort and flexibility |
| Silk·épil 7 | Higher-performance wet & dry cordless models | Regular users wanting faster epilation |
| Silk·épil 9 | Premium epilation with a wider head; some versions include a flexible head | Experienced users and full-body epilation |
| Silk·épil 9 Flex | Premium flexible-head epilator | Users wanting maximum head flexibility and coverage |
Braun currently describes the Silk·épil 9 Flex as its premium electric epilator, with a fully flexible head, 40 micro-grip tweezers, wet & dry operation and cordless use. Silk·épil 7 also offers wet & dry cordless models with 40-minute battery operation.
4. Corded vs Cordless Epilators
🔌 Corded
- Always ready to use
- No battery charging
- Unlimited operating time
- Often less expensive
- Good for regular home use
Choose this if:
You normally use your epilator at home and don’t need to use it in the shower.
🔋 Cordless
- No cable while using it
- Easier to move around the body
- Many models are Wet & Dry
- Can be used in the shower or bath when specifically designed for it
- More convenient for travel
Choose this if:
You want maximum freedom of movement and easier use on difficult areas.
🚿 Wet & Dry
- Can be used on dry skin
- Some models can be used in the shower or bath
- Warm water can make epilation more comfortable
- Usually cordless
Choose this if:
You find dry epilation uncomfortable or prefer using your device in the shower.
5. Braun Silk·épil vs Philips Epilators
Braun and Philips both offer several ranges of electric epilators.
| Feature | Braun Silk·épil | Philips Epilator |
|---|---|---|
| Entry-level models | Silk·épil 3 / selected basic models | Series 2000 |
| Mid-range | Silk·épil 5 | Series 5000 / selected models |
| Premium | Silk·épil 7 / 9 / 9 Flex | Series 8000 |
| Wet & Dry | Available on many higher models | Available on Series 8000 models |
| Cordless | Available on many models | Available on many models |
Philips Series 8000 example:
The Philips BRE740/11 uses ceramic tweezers, a wide epilation head and Double Action Technology. Philips states that it can catch hairs as short as 0.5 mm and provides cordless Wet & Dry use, with additional shaving, trimming and exfoliation accessories.

Philips Series 8000

7. Epilator or Women’s Electric Shaver?
| Epilator | Electric Shaver | |
|---|---|---|
| Hair removal | From the root | At skin level |
| Result duration | Several weeks | Usually a few days |
| Pain | Can be uncomfortable | Generally painless |
| Speed | Moderate | Very fast |
| Best for | Longer-lasting smoothness | Quick maintenance |
First time using an epilator?
If you are worried about pain, an electric shaver is the easiest place to start. If your priority is longer-lasting smoothness and you are willing to tolerate some discomfort, an epilator may be a better fit.
8. Bikini Area: Epilator, Shaver or Trimmer?
Epilator
Removes hair from the root and provides longer-lasting results, but can be more uncomfortable on sensitive areas.
Bikini Trimmer
Trims hair rather than pulling it out. Excellent for shaping and maintaining the bikini line with minimal discomfort.
Electric Shaver
Cuts hair very close to the skin and is useful when you want a quick, smooth result without pulling hair from the root.
9. IPL: Braun Silk·expert vs Philips Lumea
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. Unlike a traditional epilator, IPL does not pull the hair out. Light energy is absorbed by the pigment in the hair and targets the hair follicle, helping reduce regrowth over a series of treatments.
Braun’s IPL range includes the Silk·expert Pro 3, Silk·expert Pro 5 and newer Skin i·expert models. Philips offers the Lumea family, including the Lumea 9900.
| Electric Epilator | IPL | |
|---|---|---|
| Removes existing hair? | Yes — pulls it from the root | No — hair is normally shaved before treatment |
| Long-term reduction? | No | Yes, with regular treatments |
| Immediate smoothness? | Yes | Usually after shaving |
| Frequency | As needed | Requires a treatment schedule |
| Investment | Low to medium | Higher |
10. Braun Silk·expert IPL
Braun’s IPL devices use a skin sensor to detect skin tone and adjust the intensity. Braun currently offers the Silk·expert Pro 3, Silk·expert Pro 5 and Skin i·expert families.
Braun Silk·expert Pro 3
A more accessible entry into Braun’s IPL range, with wide and precision heads on selected versions.
Braun Silk·expert Pro 5
A higher-performance Braun IPL system. Kelchi currently lists several Pro 5 configurations, including PL5054 and PL5257.
11. Philips Lumea
Philips Lumea is Philips’ IPL family for longer-term hair reduction. Kelchi currently lists the Philips Lumea 9900 BRI951/00, with attachments designed for different body areas.
Philips Lumea 9900
A premium IPL system with SenseIQ technology and attachments for areas including the body, face, bikini and underarms.
Important: IPL is not suitable for every combination of skin tone and hair colour. Always check the manufacturer’s skin-tone and hair-colour compatibility chart and safety instructions before purchasing or using an IPL device. IPL devices should not be used over tattoos, certain pigmented lesions or other areas specifically excluded by the manufacturer.
12. Which Hair Removal Method Is Best for a Beginner?
🌸 Complete Beginner
Start with a women’s electric shaver or a basic epilator if you want to learn how epilation feels.
Good starting point: Braun Silk·épil 3 or a basic Philips epilator.
✨ Beginner Who Wants Comfort
Consider a Wet & Dry cordless epilator. Using warm water can make the experience more comfortable for many users.
Good starting point: Silk·épil 5 Wet & Dry or Philips Series 8000.
🚀 Experienced User
If you already epilate regularly, a wider premium head and additional accessories can make full-body maintenance faster.
Consider: Silk·épil 7, Silk·épil 9 or Silk·épil 9 Flex.
💡 Long-Term Hair Reduction
If your goal is to reduce hair regrowth over time rather than repeatedly remove hair from the root, consider an IPL device.
Consider: Braun Silk·expert Pro or Philips Lumea.
13. Choosing by Age
Age alone should not determine which hair removal method someone uses. Skin sensitivity, hair type, the area being treated and personal preference are usually more important.
| Situation | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Teen / first-time user | Start with a simple shaver or trimmer. If choosing an epilator, a gentler beginner-friendly model may be easier to learn with. |
| Young adult | Choose according to lifestyle: cordless Wet & Dry for convenience, epilator for longer-lasting results, or IPL for long-term reduction. |
| Frequent traveller | Cordless compact devices are easier to pack and use. |
| Busy lifestyle | A fast epilator or IPL system may reduce the amount of regular maintenance required. |
| Sensitive skin | Consider a shaver or trimmer first. For epilation, look for Wet & Dry models and use the appropriate sensitive-area accessories. |
14. Waxing
Waxing removes hair from the root and can keep skin smooth for several weeks. It can be performed professionally or at home using wax heaters, wax rolls, strips or other systems.
Kelchi also offers waxing products and accessories, including wax machines, wax rolls and wax papers.
Wax vs Epilator:
Both remove hair from the root. An epilator is reusable and does not require consumables, while waxing requires wax and other supplies but can be practical for treating larger areas.
15. Depilatory Cream
Depilatory creams chemically break down the hair close to the skin surface. They are generally painless, but they do not remove hair from the root.
- Fast and easy to apply
- No pulling sensation
- Useful for large body areas
- Results are shorter-lasting than root-removal methods
- A patch test is recommended according to the product instructions
